Adjudication of Parentage

Please note that the legal information presented on this page is written for those living in the state of Illinois.

What Does it Mean?

An adjudication of parentage is the process through which a person becomes the legal parent of a child.

Things You Should Know

Only a judge or the Department of Family Services (HFS) can decide whether someone is a child's legal parent. Legal parentage can be decided (adjudicated) based on the results of DNA testing, or due to the relevant facts of the situation.

There are also other ways for a person to become a child's legal parent.
