What Does it Mean?

A prohibited marriage is a marriage between two people that is not allowed by the state of Illinois, and so can be declared invalid (annulled).

Things You Should Know

Marriages are considered legally prohibited only when:

  • a marriage between siblings, half-siblings, or adopted siblings
  • a marriage between a full or half nice/nephew and full or half aunt/uncle
  • one spouse in a separate marriage or union enters a new marriage
  • generally speaking, a marriage between first cousins
