What Does it Mean?

The respondent to a civil court case is the person the lawsuit was started against.

Things You Should Know

The person who starts the lawsuit is called the petitioner. This is done by filing a petition with a court and serving the respondent.

When the respondent is served notice of a lawsuit, they must file their appearance in order to schedule the first court date.
