Who is the legal parent of a child?

Only the legal parent of a child can be legally ordered to pay or receive child support. There are a few different ways one can become the legal parent of a child.

Two types of child support orders

A judicial child support order is made by a judge in court; an administrative order is made by the Department of Family Services. If you have a copy of your child support order, it's easy to find out which type it is.
