Civil Union License

Please note that the legal information presented on this page is written for those living in the state of Illinois.

What Does it Mean?

A civil union license is a document confirming that two partners have entered into a legally recognized civil union. It is sometimes called a certificate of civil union.

Things You Should Know

In order to enter into a civil union in the state of Illinois, both partners must sign a civil union license and pay a $60 USD filing fee. If you cannot pay this fee, you may be able to qualify for a fee waiver.

To get a copy of your civil union license, you can visit Cook County Vital Records at 50 W. Washington St (CL-25) and pay a $15 USD fee ($4 USD for each extra copy). You can also order one online for a $12.45 USD processing fee.
