Docket Number

Please note that the legal information presented on this page is written for those living in the state of Illinois.

What Does it Mean?

In Illinois, every civil court case has a unique docket number. A cases's docket number is written on every court order you receive.

Things You Should Know

Each time you want to file a motion, you must include the docket number for the case. For family law cases (Domestic Relations), every docket number will contain the year the case started, followed by a "D".

For example, if the case started in 2020, the docket number would be:

  • "2020DXXXXXX", where the X's are different numbers for every civil court case that started in 2020.

If the documents you received for your case don't have a docket number, they may have an administrative case number instead.
