Maintenance (Alimony)

Please note that the legal information presented on this page is written for those living in the state of Illinois.

What Does it Mean?

Alimony (formally called maintenance) is a payment made to support an ex while or after you have divorced or separated.

Things You Should Know

A person can be ordered to pay alimony either through a settlement agreement or a child support order.

The amount an ex is ordered to pay in alimony can potentially be changed (modified).

Alimony will become past-due if a person fails to make an on-time payment.
