Property Divisions

Please note that the legal information presented on this page is written for those living in the state of Illinois.

What Does it Mean?

Property divisions is the process through which property purchased by two people during their marriage or civil union is divided. This division usually occurs during a divorce or dissolution of civil union.

Things You Should Know

Any property purchased during the course of a marriage is called marital property (or civil union property). In general, these are the kinds of property that are split up through property divisions. The process of dividing assets requires a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO).

Property divisions are usually ordered through a (marital) settlement agreement.
